I would like to get a new Tarot deck and book for my son who will be 11 years old this month. He has shown an interest in Tarot cards. I had purchased a Rune stone set and the Titania's Star Tarot was included. My son was excited about this deck and opened it and tried a few readings. However, he seemed discouraged because the deck and book are difficult. Which I agree with him. The only other deck set I have is the Kalevala Tarot that I only use to do readings for myself and I don't let anyone touch these cards.
I have never read Tarot professionally, nor do I plan to do such. My son I believe has an atraction to the Tarot. I would like to encourage his abilities and help him accept what he can do. He is at a good age to develop his abilities (that is before puberty happens) since it seems that changes a child, not only physically, mentally, emotionally but has an impact on their beliefs.
There are so many decks and books that it is hard for me to decide. I thought about the Rider-Waite Deck and book. I had this set before but the book seems to lack depth in its' explanation of the cards. The cards themselves were good and had clear images.
One thing I have considered is some decks have images of naked people. This I know would make my son uncomfortable. Then I have seen decks like the Gummy Bears but he is beyond child images. I don't believe it would be good to get a deck with images related to like cartoon characters as he might relate it to a game or collectible cards, etc.
Would you base the choice of the deck to what his interests are? He has some interests but they seem to be influenced by his twin brother and friends. He does have a few interests that he has developed and maintains. He likes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, dogs, and cats (he wants a cat and wants to name it Buffy). I thought about the Vampire Tarot but he is not attracted to Vampires as to him they are evil. (I chose my deck because it was based on the Finnish Epic of the Kalevala, of which my heritage mainly is, plus a little Swede and Norwegian.)
Should I try and base it on his heritage? (The same as mine plus, Polish, and Cherokee)
Maybe there is a book(s) or website that shows photos of the major Arcana of decks? Then I could show him different sets and maybe he would find one that he can relate to. Then again I could look and maybe find a deck.
Then the Tarot books are so many. There are some that go with specific decks and others that are intrpretations of the cards and spreads. Some of the books I have read seem to be the authors intrpretation which I would prefer not to use. One book I recently read had different intrepretations based on the type of reading. This was interesting but still think a book without the authors' personal interpratation would be best. I know that may be hard to find an unbiased book.
I am looking for a "nice" Tarot deck and a book that goes with the deck, plus books on learning the Tarot. I will be able to help my son with the books and layouts until he can read on his own and has the understanding. Yes, price is a consideration as I know some Tarot decks are very expensive. As for the books I may be able to find copies at our library system.
All suggestions and advice will be appreciated.
